Back pain

The essential services provided by chiropractors represent a primary approach for the prevention, diagnosis and conservative management of back pain and spinal disorders that can often enable patients to reduce or avoid the need for riskier treatments, such as prescription opioid pain medications and surgery.

In 2017, the American College of Physicians released an update to its low back pain treatment guideline that recommends first using non-drug treatments, such as spinal manipulation (a centerpiece of chiropractic care), for acute and chronic low back pain. 1

systematic review/meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2017 supports the use of spinal manipulative therapy as a first-line treatment for acute low back pain. 2

Neck pain

A neck adjustment (also known as cervical manipulation) is a precise procedure applied to the joints of the neck, usually by hand. A neck adjustment works to improve the mobility of the spine and to restore range of motion; it can also increase movement of the adjoining muscles. Patients typically notice an improved ability to turn and tilt the head, and a reduction of pain, soreness and stiffness.

Migraines and tension headaches

A majority of the population suffer from headaches. Some are occasional. Some are persistent. Some are dull and nagging, while others cause debilitating pain and nausea.

Research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by chiropractic doctors – is an effective way to treat tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck and upper back.

In a clinical trial conducted at Macquarie University, 72 percent of migraine sufferers experienced either “substantial” or “noticeable” improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment.

In fact, most headaches are related to muscle tension in the neck, which is an increasingly common condition among Americans who spend hours in the same position or posture (such as in front of a computer, smartphone or television), leading to joint irritation and tension in the upper back and scalp that cause headaches.

What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do?

Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate stress on your system.

Offer advice on posture, ergonomics, exercises and relaxation techniques.

If chiropractic works for you, it is a better option than medication and in many cases works more quickly to alleviate your discomfort.

Hernia

A herniated disc is a common condition affecting an intervertebral disc. It can occur in three locations: in the neck, (rarely) between the shoulder blades, and most commonly in the lower back.

A herniated disc is a protrusion of the intervertebral disc. This can cause pressure on the nerve, resulting in local or radiating pain. Neurological changes are always present, such as reduced strength (e.g., foot drop), reduced sensation in the legs, and impaired reflexes.

A herniated disc develops when the intervertebral disc loses its flexibility. This disc, which acts as a kind of “shock absorber” in the spine, can no longer properly absorb certain movements. As a result, small tears develop in the disc, which can lead to a protrusion. This is called a herniated disc.

The onset of these symptoms is primarily caused by poor posture, being overweight, heavy work, and work involving repetitive movements, such as lifting and twisting. Additionally, some people are genetically predisposed to a “poorer” quality intervertebral disc. When vertebrae function properly, the risk of a herniated disc is minimal. However, when vertebrae do not function properly, the intervertebral disc has to do too much work, increasing the risk of tears.

The symptoms associated with a herniated disc include pain radiating to one or both legs, tingling in the leg or foot, loss of reflexes, and the aforementioned loss of muscle strength. A severe herniated disc can even lead to the loss of control over the bladder and bowels or sexual functions. In that case, a referral to a neurologist is required immediately. If this is not done, control over the aforementioned organs may be permanently lost. The diagnosis is made based on neurological, orthopedic, and chiropractic examinations.

The chiropractor’s treatment focuses on identifying the origin of the herniated disc, examining the function of the spine and pelvis. Poorly functioning joints are made more mobile, thereby improving function. The protrusion of the intervertebral disc will disappear, and the pressure on the nerve will also disappear. As a result, the pain will decrease. In the case of a severe herniated disc, the chiropractor will refer you to a neurologist. In that case, only surgery can offer a solution.

Some of the health benefits chiropractic care and chiropractic adjustments can provide patients.

Better health and better sport performance

Chiropractic provides a safe, natural and drug-free option to locate, correct and prevent joint dysfunctions, thereby playing a vital role in keeping your body balanced, flexible and functioning at its best.

Joint dysfunctions, can negatively effect proper nerve communication from the brain to the body–often resulting in pain and discomfort.

Routine chiropractic care can help athletes achieve:

It is for a reason top athletes choose chiropractic treatment and most professional sport teams in the United States work with or have a chiropractor on staff. It is estimated that up to 90% of world class athletes use chiropractic care to improve performance and prevent injuries.

Why Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that emphasizes the body’s ability to heal itself. Treatment typically involves manual therapy, often including spinal manipulation. Other forms of treatment, such as exercise and nutritional counseling, may be used as well.

What Chiropractors Do

Chiropractors approach patient care in a manner similar to that used in conventional medicine.

They interview the patient, obtain a detailed health history, perform an examination, do tests, and develop a working diagnosis. They then develop a management plan, start treatment, and monitor the patient’s progress. Chiropractors often treat problems related to the musculoskeletal system.

The manual treatment methods used by chiropractors range from stretching and sustained pressure to specific joint manipulations, which are usually delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust. The purpose of the manipulations is to improve joint motion and function. Manipulations are most commonly done on the spine, but other parts of the body may also be treated in this way.

Education and Licensure of Practitioners

To practice in the United States, chiropractors must earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exam, and have a state license. Many states also require chiropractors to pass an exam about state-specific laws, and all states require practicing chiropractors to take continuing education classes.

To enroll in a D.C. program in the United States, which typically takes 4 years to complete, students must have had at least 3 years of undergraduate education (university level).

Institutions that award the D.C. degree are accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, which is recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Secretary of Education. In 2017, there were 15 accredited D.C. programs on 18 campuses.

Chiropractic education includes classes in basic sciences, such as anatomy and physiology, and supervised clinical experience in which students learn skills such as spinal assessment, adjustment techniques, and making diagnoses.

Techniques used in the practice

Diversified

Diversified

The diversified technique is the most commonly used chiropractic treatment; it involves the manipulation and adjustment of the spinal column and/or extremities. It is called the Diversified Technique because it is a combination of the best techniques from other methods of manipulation.

I also adjust extremities such as the wrist and ankle whereas many chiropractors do not.

Thompson Drop

This is a specific chiropractic method and is a variation of the Diversified technique that uses a special table with several segments called drop pieces. These segments can be cocked up a fraction of an inch, so when the thrust is delivered, the table will drop this fraction of an inch increasing the velocity of the adjustment. The object of the drop is to distract (open) the joint during the adjustment. The drop pieces assists the thrust, while minimizing the force required for the adjustment. This makes for a much more comfortable adjustment.

Cox Flexion Distraction

This is a specific chiropractic technique that uses mechanical and hands-on manipulation utilizing a special table where the spine is tractioned and flexed forward. This technique is primarily utilized to treat cervical and lumbar disc herniations, non-disc spinal disorders, and to increase mobility of spinal joints.

S.O.T. (Sacro-occipital Technique)

This is a specific chiropractic technique that uses triangular-shaped blocks usually placed under the pelvis of the prone patient to treat problems identified in the low back. Low force, slow pressure types of manipulations/adjustments may be used to address joint problems. SOT is mostly used in combination with other techniques in our practice

Gonstead

The focus of the Gonstead adjustment is to be as specific, precise and accurate as possible to provide the most accurate and painless adjustment possible. It is the goal of your Gonstead doctor to restore and maintain optimal health by locating and correcting any interference to the nervous system caused by vertebral misalignments.

Dr Gonstead was a trained mechanical engineer who realized that the body’s foundation is formed by the pelvic girdle. When this or any of the vertebrae making up the spinal column become tilted or out of alignment, dramatic changes can occur in the body that may result in pain and decreased health.

I am not a pure Gonstead chiropractor but I do use his principles when adjusting patients.

Adjusting instrument (often referred to as an Activator)

This is a hand-held, spring-loaded instrument-based manipulation/adjustment protocol.

Instead of the manipulating/adjusting forces being delivered by hand, force is generated with the small appliance that delivers a lighter, but quicker, thrust than can be delivered by hand.

Activator can be used as a primary treatment protocol or a selective method for patients who may not desire manual manipulation/adjustment or where manual manipulation/adjustment may be contraindicated.

The aim is to produce enough force to move the vertebrae, but not enough to cause injury
